Stanley Jones studied at Wigan School of Art and then the Slade School of Art in London.
He studied lithography in Paris at the Ecole de Beaux Arts and the Atelier Patris, Montparnasse, before returning to London with his wealth of knowledge and skills to help set up the Curwen Studio.
Curwen Studio, led by Stanley, was a major part of a rapid development in British Printmaking, allowing artists the freedom to work in artistic printmaking and building Stanley's reputation as one of the greatest master printmakers of all time. During this period Stanley printed with major British artists of the 20th century including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink, Paula Rego, Ceri Richards, David Hockney and Edward Bawden.
At this time Stanley also began lecturing in lithography at the Slade School of Art.
The Curwen Print Study Centre, a development from the Curwen Studio, was founded by Stanley as an educational charity in the 1990’s. His passion for printmaking inspired his aim that handcrafted fine art printmaking was protected for future generations and that artists of all abilities have the opportunity to learn and develop these skills.
Stanley was awarded an MBE in 2000 for 'services to lithography.'
All those who met Stanley will remember him for his calm and gentle nature, and the artists he worked with will know the generosity and kindness with which he shared his skills, knowledge and guidance.
