Zelda Malan is fascinated by typefaces as an art form and their broader use as metaphors or ironic statements. Her prints explore these themes by using typography as both an image and a means of communication, often incorporating a subtle element of humour.
Zelda finds her type imagery from a variety of sources; anything from instructions on packaging, curious vintage objects and graphics or street signs.
Carefully observed, her images are created using a range of drawing and print processes.
Graduating from the RCA with an MA in Graphic Design, Zelda Malan’s all-consuming interest in type emanates from her subsequent careers as an advertising Art Director, Graphic designer, and Senior lecturer in Graphic Communication and Strategic Thinking at Central St Martins, and Kingston University.
