Peter Lloyd is best known for his screen printed images of Mexican wrestlers. His current body of work explores black culture and the diverse world of Afrofuturism thorough the pop culture lens of the super hero. In addition to thinking critically about ideas he pushes and questions what can easily be perceived and accepted as the limitations of process and technique.
Since graduating from Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London in 2000, where Peter was the recipient of the prestigious Augustus Martin Award, he has exhibited extensively in the UK and significantly in Europe, China and the USA. Peter has work in private collections in the UK, Germany and the USA and his work can be found in many public collections, including Hochschule de Kunst, Berlin, Royal College of Art, London, Muzeum Etnograficzne (Ethnographic Museum), Krakow, Poland and the Tate, London.
In addition to practicing as an Artist he is also the Dean of Art, Design & Fashion at Solent University, Southampton, UK. He has travelled extensively as an academic and practitioner and this has resulted in him being awarded two prestigious honours; Visiting Professor at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou and Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Institute of Technology, China.
Traditionally trained as a Printmaker to BA (Hons) level at Winchester School of Art in the 1990’s, he then went on to learn his trade as an assistant Printmaking Technician at Winchester School of Art before deciding to push his ideas and technique further by undertaking MA study at the Royal College of Art. He primarily explored etching then monoprint before focusing on screen printing. Over the last three years he has become particularly interested in the process of digital production; drawing, painting and printing and is able to access cutting edge materials and equipment through his University work. Peter's core interest is telling stories through the use of motifs, signs and symbolism and his core method of working is the production of graphic imagery through the use of layers, however high-tech/low-tech or traditional/new age the solution might be.
