Hendy’s work investigates the everyday surfaces, materials and textures that are often overlooked. Taking time to re-examine these objects in greater detail begins to reveal subtle detail and tonal range, which he describes in linocut though the use of varied mark making and pattern.
Circus, carnival and fairground themes often appear in his work, offering a sense of fun and eerie nostalgia, but with the same attention to detail, pattern and sense of tonal variation as his work investigating surface and texture. He is currently fascinated with the idea of capturing the fluidity and energy of his drawings through the use of relief printmaking techniques.
In 2012, Hendy’s linocut, Self Portrait, was shortlisted for the Threadneedle Prize, UK - Europe’s pre-eminent prize for figurative and representational art. In 2014, he was commissioned by homeless charity Crisis to produce new work to be sold under auction at Christie’s to raise money for the charity. Hendy was also a prizewinning artist in the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists’ Print Prize 2016.
Hendy graduated from the BA Illustration course at Middlesex University with a First Class Honours Degree in 2012. He currently teaches at Middlesex University as the Visual Arts Lecturer on the Visual Art and 3D Design Foundation Year.
Hendy was elected as a Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Associate member in February 2018.
